This striking variety of quinoa left farm visitors puzzled this year, as its vibrant color and form closely resemble ornamental amaranth, especially the pink-toned varieties. The tall, bold plants really come into their own in late summer, adding ornamental beauty alongside their nutritional value. Quinoa is a staple food crop originating in the NW Andes, it has been cultivated for human consumption for at least 3,000–4,000 years. It’s easy to grow, harvest, and clean if you’re wanting to experiment with growing your own! This particular variety was bred by Frank Morton of Wild Garden Seed and is part of the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI) ensuring its accessibility for future growers.
