Also known as Cornflower, this sturdy annual from the Asteraceae family is native to Europe and features small blooms in a lovely shade of pink tinged with white that offer a change from the more common blue variety. It actually does bring a touch of romance to gardens and floral arrangements. It also reminds me of a birthday cake with pink and white frosting! Easy to grow and reliable, Bachelor Buttons are a classic kitchen garden plant that thrive with minimal effort.
The edible petals add a whimsical touch to salads or desserts (like birthday cake!). The flowers are highly beneficial to wildlife and attract many pollinators, including butterflies, and draw in bird species like the American Goldfinch. Deadheading encourages continuous blooms. Although the blooms are small, they have a great vase-life. Not to be confused with the perennial Centaurea americana (Basket Flower), Cornflower is an annual treasured for its easy to grow and carefree nature. Perfect for beginners.
